How to Change the Locks on a New Suitcase

When you purchase a new suitcase, one of the features you might notice is the built-in lock. Luggage locks serve a vital purpose in keeping your belongings secure during your travels. Before you start packing and planning your itinerary, it’s important to personalise your suitcase by setting a new, unique code for the lock. Let's delve into why these locks are more than just an accessory and how to set your new personal code in preparation for a seamless travel experience.

Why Do Suitcases Come With Locks?

Suitcases are designed to protect and secure your personal items while you are travelling. The locks on suitcases add an extra layer of security, deterring theft, unauthorised access to your belongings and providing peace of mind knowing that your items and every point of your journey.

Why Are Suitcase Locks Important?

Not only do suitcase locks provide added layers of privacy and protection from theft but also prevent accidental opening during transit. This ensures that your items stay intact and arrive at your destination just as you packed them.

For even more protection from accidental openings, combine your locked suitcase with a suitcase strap.

How to Set Suitcase Locks for Travelling

Setting the lock on your new suitcase is a straightforward process. Most new suitcases come with instructions on how to set the lock, so make sure to check that out.

1. Align the Dials: Start by setting the dials to the original combination, which is 0-0-0. Make sure the numbers are perfectly aligned and straight. If they're not correctly aligned, the lock will not open.

2. Press the Reset Button: Locate the reset button on your lock. Using a tool (a pen is usually sufficient), press down on this button until you hear a "click" sound. This indicates that the lock is ready for you to set a new combination.

3. Set Your New Combination: Turn the dials to your desired combination. For example, if you want your new code to be 8-8-5, adjust each dial to these numbers accordingly.

4. Lock the Combination: Once your new combination is set, slide or push the Open button in the direction of the arrow. Continue until you hear another "click" sound. This signifies that the reset button has popped back up, locking in your new combination.

5. Test Your New Combination: Before inserting the zipper pullers into the lock, it's a good idea to test your new combination. Set the dials to your new code and try opening the lock to ensure it works correctly.

Important Tips:

  • Remember Your Combination: Always make a note of your new combination and keep it in a safe place, like your notes app on your phone. Setting your combination a few days before your trip is advisable, providing ample time to address any issues that may arise.
  • Resetting Your Combination: Should you need to reset your combination again in the future, remember that you must use your most current combination to do so. The factory setting of 000 will not work once you've personalised your lock.
  • Inserting Zipper Pullers: You can insert the zipper pullers into the lock at any stage. However, it's recommended to set and test your new combination before doing so, ensuring everything functions as expected without complications.
  • Forgot your suitcase lock combination? For security purposes, suitcases are not supplied with keys to unlock your suitcase if you forget your combination. You can visit a repair centre and they will replace the lock at your cost, or you can test all the combinations (from 0-0-0 to 9-9-9) which takes approximately 1 hour.

What Are TSA Locks?

TSA locks are a type of luggage lock approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). These locks can be opened by TSA agents using a universal master key, allowing them to inspect your luggage without damaging the lock. This is particularly important when travelling to the United States, as the US border patrol has the authority to check any luggage entering the country. A TSA-approved lock ensures that your suitcase can be inspected without being broken, maintaining both security and convenience.

Suitcases installed with TSA-approved locks will have a read diamond symbol logo that means it’s Travel Sentry® Approved and is accepted by the TSA agencies.
